Why Sexual Health Needs Your Support

Sexual health is sometimes not that high on the list of priorities for local politicians, local authorities and the local NHS. People affected tend not to be as open about their conditions and are much less likely to make a fuss if they receive a poor standard of care or if there aren’t any services to meet their needs.

Although there are some national targets around chlamydia screening and teenage pregnancy, many PCT plans don't mention other important areas of sexual health, like HIV and contraception. Without a commitment to local action, sexual health will continue to lose out to other, less stigmatised, conditions.

Sexual health is one of the six areas of focus in the government’s report High Quality Care for All, and it should be a priority in every area.  As part of putting this key national government policy into action locally, your PCT will have developed a five-year plan for your community.  This plan is refreshed annually between around October and January.  We need your help to make sure that sexual health is a priority.  Of course, many PCTs are already working to improve sexual health, but it may benefit them for you to let them know you’re interested in making sure it remains a priority in your area.
